Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI) will tap investors for up to 2.5 billion euros next year to fill a capital deficit laid bare by recent stress tests and pay back state aid in a move bankers said would prepare the Italian lender for a likely takeover.

Alitala, Italy's flag carrier, has written to Italian banks UniCredit and Intesa Sanpaolo asking to extend an existing loan agreement by €50 million. This comes on top of the €200 million in bank loans agreed on in October.
Italian airline Alitalia said on Thursday that it was able to raise EUR173 million of EUR300 million it needed in its cash call from investors with help from Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit.
Intesa Sanpaolo named its new CEO after the resignation of Enrico Tommaso Cucchiani, according to a Bloomberg report.
The conflict between heads in Intesa Sanpaolo may come to a head next week as Supervisory Board Chair Giovanni Bazoli meets with CEO Enrico Cucchiani.
