Blade Runner 2 is currently in the works and director Denis Villeneuve teased about taking care of the biggest question from the first film. Oscar-nominated Roger Deakins also revealed that the sequel will be different than the original.

Since the first film, the question of Rick Deckard's identity remains to be a mystery. According to Cinema Blend, it was not confirmed in the previous film whether Deckard is a human or one of the replicants, and when the question was addressed to Villeneuve, his answer was also rather cryptic saying that he will take care of it.

"The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it", he said.

In a report by Games Radar, Villeneuve also admitted to feeling the pressure in creating the sequel. According to Villeneuve, when he first found out about a Blade Runner sequel, he thought of it as a good idea, but also eventually realized that it might in fact be a bad idea, given that the film is one of his favorite movies.

Villeneuve also admitted that the film is in fact a huge challenge for him saying, "It's a huge challenge, because you don't want to cut and paste, otherwise why [do it]? And at the same time you have to respect what was done, so you have to find the right equilibrium between being faithful to the first one and bringing something new at the same time that will make sense to the Blade Runner universe".

Since its announcement, details about the upcoming film have been scarce but Harrison Ford returning to reprise his role as Rick Deckard has been confirmed. Meanwhile, without spilling anything regarding the plot, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins said that the film will indeed be an entirely separate movie.

Speaking to Screen Crush, Deakins revealed that the upcoming film will be able to stand by itself. According to Deakins, the film will contain certain elements that will  connect to the original film, however, it will have its new take of its own. He further stressed that the sequel will be a progression on the story.

Blade Runner 2 is set in the same universe of the 1982 original film which was directed by Ridley Scott. The sequel will be directed by Villeneuve with the screenplay written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. No release date has been confirmed yet, although, more details are expected to be revealed as production takes progress.
