Google, the giant search engine, recently launched the Google News Publication Center. While European publishers don't necessarily favor this concept, US publishers see it as a welcome opportunity for them to have control over how Google indexes their particular site.

Google really plays a big role in web traffic sourcing according to Adam Shrek. Publishers, be it of newspapers, magazines and others, want their structure to be picked up by Google in the correct way. Robots or "bots" generally decide how to classify content. With the Google News Publication Center, interface is made easier by letting publishers update content in 'real time.' Articles can be classified into sections such as local news, politics, finance, fashion, entertainment, technology, travel, etc. If there is any additional information or updates that the publisher wants to include, it can easily be done now. Consequently, the site's information or data is made as current as possible.

If people check the company's support page, the website states: "Google News Publisher Center is a web tool that makes it possible for you to quickly and easily update information about your news source." It is intended to be helpful in assisting all publishers from something as basic as changing the site's name to something more complicated like maybe adding a new section or special feature like the Olympics, etc.

The bottom line is that this new web tool was released to support publishers. Publishers can choose to take advantage of it or leave it. However, as of this time, the Google News Publication Center is only available in the United States. In the near future, Google hopes and aims to expand it to other countries as well. As Google aims to serve both the publishers and the reading public, it will continue to innovate and add more features to optimize the use of the publication center.
