Networking technology company Netgear is poised to go further in its foray in the smart home security technology as it introduced its newest product, the Arlo Q.

In a press release, Netgear touts the Arlo Q as an indoor wireless IP security camera that offers 1080p high definition streaming with a 4 megapixel image sensor as well as night vision recording capabilities. In addition, the product has a built-in speaker and microphone to facilitate two-way recording capabilities, intelligent detection, and motion and sound alerts that can deliver notifications to an iOS or Android device.

In terms of recording and storage, Netgear is offering 7 days free recording and storage over the cloud for the Arlo Q. In contrast, competitors like NestCam also offer cloud recording service as well but it is not free and is only available via subscription while others like Samsung's SmartCam HD Pro and the Ezviz Mini offer microSD card storage options as noted on CNET.

In a recent interview that was quoted by Engadget, Netgear director of product management for smart home Damir Skripic said that cloud storage and infrastructure, content availability, as well as video analytics will become a real differentiating point for a lot of these security devices.  He also adds that all these security devices would be very similar, but how they would interact within the home will be the key differentiator.

The San Jose, California-based company's announcement of the Arlo Q comes on the heels of the success of the Arlo, its first foray in smart home security. The Arlo is a wireless and weatherproof outdoor security camera solution, offering 720p resolution and no sound recording. Nevertheless, it managed to capture 20 percent of the US market share in a period of 6 months since its introduction in November last year.

The Arlo Q is expected to be available in the US by December with a price tag of $220 and in the UK soon after for £170.
