McDonald's has unveiled a new global growth plan that centers on a revamped restaurant design, upgraded food and drink quality, and an aggressive expansion of its worldwide footprint.
The company's latest strategy, branded as "McDonald's > NEXT," focuses on four pillars: new restaurant formats, better-tasting menu items, technology-driven innovation, and improved customer service.
Executives say the plan is designed to keep the chain competitive as inflation and high fuel costs force diners to be more selective about where they eat, according to CNBC.
The initiative builds on the existing "Accelerating the Arches" program, which has guided the brand's recent emphasis on digital ordering, delivery, and drive-thru operations.
McDonald's aims to operate 50,000 restaurants globally by the end of 2027, which would be the fastest expansion period in the company's history.
The company has previously outlined plans to add about 10,000 new locations by 2027, with roughly 8,000 openings targeted by the end of 2026 and a heavy focus on high-traffic and emerging markets.
Around 900 of those new restaurants are expected to open in the United States, while the majority will be in international markets where demand for quick-service dining remains strong.
A key part of the growth plan is a new generation of restaurant designs that prioritize digital ordering, speed, and comfort.
Recent concept sites include the "Sizzle" design, which pairs a clean, modern interior with kiosks and dedicated spaces for mobile pickup, and a "Mood Engine" restaurant in Hong Kong that uses large digital screens and lighting to change the atmosphere throughout the day.
The company is also upgrading thousands of existing locations, including about 27,000 drive-thru lanes that are being reconfigured to handle more cars and reduce wait times, Fox Business reported.
On the menu side, McDonald's is expanding a set of initiatives intended to improve the taste and quality of its core items. Its "Best Burger Initiative" focuses on new searing techniques, larger patties in some markets, and fresher ingredients, and is slated to reach nearly all markets by 2026.
The chain is also growing its chicken lineup, including its McCrispy sandwich platform and new wraps, and testing additional drink options inspired by its "CosMc's" beverage-focused concept.
Technology and digital tools play a central role in the new strategy. McDonald's is deepening its partnership with Google Cloud to deploy artificial intelligence that can streamline kitchen operations, support faster, more accurate drive-thru ordering, and reduce complexity for crews.
The company expects digital channels, including its app and loyalty program, to generate a growing share of sales, and it has projected that about 30% of all deliveries could be processed through its app by 2027, as per Forbes.
