Ford is recalling over one million vehicles because of an issue with the rearview cameras. The problem may cause the rearview camera to freeze or fail to display when the vehicle is backing up.
This makes it harder for drivers to see what's behind them, increasing the chance of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall affects 1,075,299 Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
These include popular models like the F-150, Bronco, Mustang, Edge, and several Lincoln models. The problem is caused by a software error in the camera system.
"A frozen rear-view camera display image while in reverse can create a false representation of where the vehicle is relative to its surroundings," the NHTSA explained.
That means drivers may not see people, pets, or objects behind their car, which can lead to accidents.
Ford reported one minor accident connected to the rearview camera issue. There were no injuries reported.
According to USA Today, the company has already planned a fix and will offer a free software update. Owners will be able to get the update at a Ford or Lincoln dealer, or in many cases, it will be sent automatically over the internet.
Owners of the impacted vehicles will begin receiving notification letters by mail starting June 16, 2025. A second letter will follow once the update is ready between July and September.
