Ford is recalling over 274,000 Expedition and also Lincoln Navigator SUVs across the US due to a safety issue that could lead to brake failure.

The recall applies to 2022–2024 models of the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. The problem stems from front brake lines that could rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, potentially leading to brake system damage over time.

Based on documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this could lead to brake fluid leaks and reduced braking ability.

According to ABC News, the recall affects a total of 223,315 Ford Expeditions and also 50,474 Lincoln Navigators.

Ford estimates that only around 1% of the recalled vehicles may actually have the defect. However, as of April 17, the company has received 45 warranty claims related to front brake line leaks.

No crashes or injuries related to the problem have been reported so far.

"If there is a rapid loss of brake fluid or the brake fluid is completely gone, this can make it take longer to stop the car, which could cause a crash," Ford said in its recall notice.

Ford Announces Free Brake Line Inspections and Repairs for Affected SUVs

Ford explained that the issue may have started during the engine installation process at its Kentucky Truck Plant.

Vehicles made before November 2024 may have been affected, before changes were made to prevent the brake line from being bent.

As part of the recall, technicians at Ford and also Lincoln dealerships will check the front brake lines. If they find any problems, they'll make the necessary replacements—either the brake lines or the air cleaner outlet pipe—to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive.

All repairs will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners.

Dealers were informed about the recall on May 14, and affected customers can expect to receive notification letters between May 26 and May 30, USA Today said.

In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting the NHTSA recall website or Ford's recall lookup tool. This recall is identified by the number 25S47.

NHTSA also warned that drivers of affected vehicles might notice the brake pedal traveling farther than usual or a red brake warning light if the fluid is leaking. These could be signs of a possible brake issue.

Ford said customers who have already paid to fix this issue may be eligible for a refund.
