Brazil probes Google over antitrust charges

Brazil had been probing on Google Inc. for anticompetitive practices alleged by Brazilian rivals and Microsoft Corp, said a Reuters report. This added to government pressure as Google is confronted with investigations in one of its fastest growing major markets.

Cade, a Brazilian antitrust watchdog said last Friday that it had been looking into several accusations against Google. This included allegations that Google had unfairly used rivals' content and discouraged advertisers. Google was also alleged of favoring its own product listings in search results, said a report from Reuters.

In an e-mailed statement, a Google representative in Sao Paulo said that the company would cooperate with the Brazilian regulators.

Microsoft filed a complaint against Google charging the search engine firm with advertising campaign obstruction. Microsoft alleged that Google had given unfair advantage to its highly profitable AdWords services, said a Cade statement.

In 2012, Google generated revenue which totaled USD50.18 billion. In the same year, the company's income was at USD10.74 billion while its total equity was valued USD71.72 billion. Meanwhile, Google's 2012 operating income was at USD12.76 billion while its total assets were valued USD93.80 billion.
