Several employees at Disneyland Park were hospitalized Tuesday after a chemical reaction occurred in a backstage area near the popular Star Tours – The Adventures Continue ride, prompting an emergency response from local fire crews.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. when an unusual odor was reported in a restricted area behind Tomorrowland, according to officials from the Anaheim Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly arrived and began investigating the source of the smell while wearing protective hazmat suits, FoxBusiness reported.

Park representatives later confirmed that materials being used by a contractor caused a chemical reaction backstage. The reaction affected several "cast members," the name Disney uses for its employees.

Paramedics treated a number of workers at the scene. Five employees who reported dizziness and shortness of breath were taken to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Their conditions were not immediately released.

Disneyland Guests Moved After Emergency

Emergency crews worked to check the area and make sure it was safe. Video footage from the scene showed firefighters and law enforcement vehicles gathered near Tomorrowland while responders assessed the situation.

Out of caution, park officials temporarily cleared nearby guest areas while first responders handled the incident. Visitors were moved away from the affected section until safety checks were completed.

Despite the emergency response, the theme park itself remained open. Officials said the situation was contained to the backstage area and no guests were harmed.

Authorities have not yet shared details about the specific materials involved in the reaction. It is also unclear how many employees were working nearby when the incident occurred.

A spokesperson for the park said several workers were examined by paramedics on site and allowed to return after treatment. Others were transported to hospitals simply to ensure they were safe.

According to EW, the Anaheim Police Department confirmed that the issue was limited to the backstage section and did not pose a danger to visitors. "There are no concerns with any park guests at this time," officials said.

Nearby rides were briefly affected during the response. While Star Tours later appeared to operate normally, the neighboring Space Mountain ride was listed as temporarily closed on the park's mobile app.

The emergency comes as Disneyland continues celebrating its 70th anniversary, which began in May 2025 and will run through August 2026.
