General Motors is recalling more than 23,000 Chevrolet Corvettes due to a fuel leak issue that poses a potential fire risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.
The recall affects 2023 to 2026 Corvette models, including 2026 Coupe and Convertible versions, equipped with a left-side radiator and cooling fan combination.
Authorities discovered that during refueling, excess fuel can overflow into the car's fuel-filler area.
If this fuel leaks onto a hot radiator or comes into contact with the cooling fan, it could vaporize and ignite, creating a fire risk.
"Excess fuel may spill into the vehicle fuel-filler pocket during refueling and leak onto an ignition source," the NHTSA stated in the recall notice.
The problem was linked to four reported fire incidents, though two of these were related to malfunctioning gas station pumps at the time of the spills.
According to FoxBusiness, GM noted that the issue is uncommon, impacting roughly 0.1% of the vehicles included in the recall.
To address the issue, GM dealerships will install a protective shield in the fuel-filler pocket to divert any spilled fuel safely.
The remedy will be free for all owners, and Chevrolet will notify affected vehicle owners starting October 6. A second notice will follow once the fix is ready to install.
"This is a rare occurrence, and malfunctioning filling station pumps appear to be a contributing factor. The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we're working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible," a GM spokesperson said.
