General Motors (GM) is recalling 597,630 full-size trucks and SUVs due to a serious engine failure risk that could lead to sudden power loss and increase the chances of a crash.

The recall affects several 2021-2024 models of GM's most popular vehicles, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue is tied to defects in the V8 engine components, specifically the connecting rods and crankshaft.

These defects can cause damage to the engine, which may result in complete engine failure without warning.

This recall comes after a series of complaints from customers, prompting an investigation by the NHTSA.

According to RoadAndTrack, the complaints were centered around the L87 6.2-liter V8 engine, which powers models such as the 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL.

The NHTSA had already launched an investigation in January after receiving over 39 complaints from owners of GM vehicles equipped with the L87 V8 engine.

The issues ranged from sediment buildup causing wear in the engine's components to problems with the crankshaft itself, which could lead to a catastrophic failure and loss of engine power.

GM Begins Vehicle Inspections for Engine Failures, Free of Charge

To address this issue, GM has instructed dealers to inspect the affected vehicles for engine defects.

Depending on the condition of the engine, repairs or even a full replacement may be necessary. The inspection and any required repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owners.

GM will begin mailing notification letters to affected vehicle owners on June 9, 2025, CBS News said. In the meantime, owners who are concerned about their vehicles can contact the customer service departments of Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC for more information.

The relevant contact numbers are Cadillac: 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet: 1-800-222-1020, and GMC: 1-800-462-8782.

For more details, vehicle owners can also reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit the NHTSA website at nhtsa.gov.

GM is committed to resolving the problem as quickly as possible and will provide free repairs or engine replacements as necessary.

If an engine passes inspection, GM will update the vehicle by filling it with a higher-weight oil and providing new stickers and documentation to owners.
