American Airlines will begin offering in-flight WiFi powered by SpaceX's Starlink on more than 500 aircraft starting in the first quarter of 2027, expanding high-speed connectivity across its domestic and short-haul international network.
The carrier announced that Starlink hardware will be installed on a large portion of its single-aisle Airbus fleet, including existing aircraft and upcoming A321neo and A321XLR deliveries.
Installations are scheduled to start in early 2027, with the service aimed at routes within the United States and on shorter international flights where narrowbody jets are typically used.
American said the move is part of a broader modernization of its in-flight customer experience, following earlier steps to expand free WiFi access for many AAdvantage members on existing satellite systems. The airline currently offers connectivity from multiple providers on most of its narrowbody and some widebody aircraft, but Starlink is expected to become a primary option on upgraded Airbus planes.
Starlink Aviation uses a network of low Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to aircraft via specialized terminals mounted on the fuselage. The system supports download speeds that accommodate activities such as video streaming, video calls, VPN use, and online gaming for multiple passengers simultaneously, per its website.
American's adoption of Starlink follows similar connectivity deals the satellite operator has signed with several other major airlines. The expansion of low Earth orbit systems into commercial aviation has increased competition with established providers that rely on geostationary satellites and air-to-ground networks, pushing airlines to upgrade bandwidth and reliability for passengers.
The airline has not disclosed specific timelines for when individual routes will see the new service, but said the rollout will be phased as aircraft rotate through installation and maintenance checks from early 2027 onward.
