Amazon has launched a major update to its delivery service, now offering same-day delivery of fresh groceries in more than 1,000 cities and towns across the U.S., the company announced Wednesday.

This includes perishable items like milk, fruits, vegetables, frozen foods, baked goods, seafood, and meat.

According to FoxBusiness, the move marks Amazon's latest push to compete directly with grocery delivery services from Walmart+ and Instacart. Previously, Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods handled grocery deliveries separately.

Amazon now lets shoppers get groceries and other items delivered the same day, all in a single order.

"By introducing fresh groceries into our Same-Day Delivery service, we're creating a quick and easy experience for customers," said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores.

"They can order milk alongside electronics... and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours."

Amazon Prime members can enjoy the new same-day delivery for free on orders over $25 in most cities, as part of their $14.99 monthly or $139 yearly membership.

Even if you're not an Amazon Prime member, you can get same-day delivery, though there's a $12.99 fee for each order.

Amazon's $4B Investment Targets Faster Grocery Delivery Nationwide

This expansion is already active in places like Phoenix, Raleigh, and Tampa, with plans to grow to 2,300 locations by the end of the year.

This expands on Amazon's $4 billion investment earlier this summer to improve its delivery network, focusing especially on reaching rural areas, Reuters said.

Industry experts say this change will not only challenge other grocery delivery platforms, but also make Amazon more attractive to customers looking for faster, simpler grocery shopping.

Analyst Blake Droesch noted that lowering the minimum order to $25 could be a direct hit to Instacart, which is known for quick, small purchases.

Amazon reported over $100 billion in grocery and household sales in 2024 — even before this upgrade.

The new service allows the company to offer even more convenience while potentially drawing in new Prime subscribers.

Though the new offering is focused on US cities, experts believe the impact will be widespread. "This could put pressure on smaller grocery stores and other food delivery apps," said one financial analyst.
