Mondelēz Global LLC, the company behind Ritz crackers, has issued a nationwide recall of several peanut butter cracker products due to a packaging error that may pose serious risks for people with peanut allergies.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that some individually wrapped peanut butter cracker sandwiches were mistakenly labeled as cheese crackers.
According to Newsweek, this labeling mistake could result in people unknowingly eating peanuts, a common and potentially life-threatening allergen.
"The recall was initiated after Mondelēz discovered that film packaging rolls used to wrap peanut butter crackers were defective due to a supplier error," the FDA explained. "Corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur."

So far, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported. But the FDA warns that anyone with a peanut allergy should not eat the recalled crackers and should throw them away immediately.
Peanut allergies can cause serious health issues. Even a small amount of peanut can trigger anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that may require emergency treatment.
