Nissan is issuing a recall for over 480,000 vehicles in the US and Canada because of an engine problem that could cause the car to suddenly lose power.

The automaker reported that certain engines may have faulty bearings, which can cause the engine to fail while driving. The recall affects 443,899 cars in the United States and 37,837 in Canada.

The recall affects several popular models, including the 2019–2020 Nissan Altima, 2019–2022 Infiniti QX50, 2021–2024 Nissan Rogue, and 2022 Infiniti QX55.

According to CBS News, the recalled vehicles all come with either a 1.5L 3-cylinder or a 2.0L 4-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, which has been linked to the reported issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the issue stems from defects in the engine bearings that were made during manufacturing.

These issues may not happen right away, but over time they can lead to engine damage or even a complete breakdown.

Drivers may hear strange noises from the engine, feel rough driving, or see warning lights on their dashboard. These signs can help warn owners before the engine stops working.

Free Repairs Offered in Nissan, Infiniti Recall

To address the problem, Nissan and Infiniti dealers will check the engine oil pan for any signs of metal debris.

If metal debris is found, the engine will either be repaired or completely replaced—free of charge to the owner. If there is no debris, the fix depends on the engine type.

For vehicles with the 1.5L engine, dealers will change the oil, replace the oil pan gasket, and update the engine's software. Cars with the 2.0L engine will just get an oil change, AP said.

Nissan will begin mailing out notification letters to affected vehicle owners starting August 25. Owners are advised to take their cars to the dealership as soon as they receive the letter.

The company stated the recall is part of its "ongoing commitment to customer safety." While no injury reports have been made public, the recall is considered important because a sudden engine failure can raise the risk of accidents.

If owners have any questions, they can reach out to Nissan at 800-647-7261 or contact Infiniti at 800-662-6200 for more information.

They can also visit www.nhtsa.gov to check if their car is included in the recall by using the vehicle identification number (VIN).
