Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates in numerous countries all over the world. However, in UK, Mothering Sunday was marked on March 30. Following the celebration, Google’s homepage showed a Doodle with a mother bicycling with her daughter and son.

The history of Mothering Sunday in UK originated after domestic servants were allowed a day off by their employers to go home and visit their mothers and the rest of the members of their families. According to The Independent, the custom originated in the 16th century when people started to go to the “mother church” of their area until Easter.

Meanwhile, the customary giving of flowers from children to their mums on Mothering Sunday was said to have started on the same period. Children would pick wild flowers and violets and tie them in bouquets as they go to church. The Independent report said that Mothering Sunday was also known to be Refreshment Sunday after food restrictions and strict rules for Lent.
