Walmart is making a major investment in its pharmacy workforce, raising wages for pharmacy technicians and launching thousands of new leadership roles across its US stores.
Pharmacy technicians, who previously earned an average of $22 per hour, can now earn up to $40.50 per hour — a top-end increase of about 84%, the company confirmed.
The retailer is also creating 3,000 new pharmacy operations team lead positions, with pay ranging from $28 to $42 per hour, plus location-based bonuses, NY Post reported.
Walmart said not all associates will qualify for the highest wages, which depend on certification and credentials, but certified pharmacy technicians earn roughly $3 more per hour than their non-certified peers. Walmart even covers the cost of certification for those who pursue it.
The wage boost is part of Walmart's broader Health & Wellness strategy, which spans roughly 4,600 pharmacies nationwide and employs about 35,000 pharmacy technicians and 15,000 pharmacists.
Higher pay will be concentrated in high cost-of-living markets, reflecting the company's effort to attract and retain skilled workers as demand for pharmacy services continues to grow.

Walmart Opens Pharmacy Jobs to Non-Degree Candidates
Walmart emphasized that these pharmacy roles do not require a college degree.
Positions such as pharmacy sales associate, pharmacy technician, and pharmacy operations team lead remain open to candidates with or without higher education credentials, lowering barriers to entry for those seeking a career in healthcare.
Employees have praised the changes, citing better career growth and financial stability.
Leisha Gonzalez, a newly promoted pharmacy operations team lead in Callaway, Florida, highlighted the company's support: "My hard work has paid off, and I am grateful for the opportunities," she said.
"The company has helped me build confidence, develop leadership skills, and better serve our patients."
Since 2016, more than 22,000 Walmart associates have completed pharmacy technician certification programs, opening doors to higher pay and leadership opportunities.
The new pay structure and leadership roles are part of a long-term strategy to grow internal career pathways while expanding Walmart's broader health and wellness footprint across the country.
According to ET, in addition to higher wages, Walmart pharmacy associates continue to receive benefits including medical coverage, a 401(k) plan with a 6% company match, and paid time off, including parental leave.
