McDonald's is bringing back its iconic Monopoly game after a 10-year break, giving customers a chance to win prizes ranging from free food to a $1 million cash reward.

The promotion officially launches in US restaurants on October 6 and will run for a limited time.

This year, the game comes with a major twist: it's going digital. While the traditional peel-off pieces will still be found on select menu items like large fries, the company has added "digital game pieces" that can be redeemed through the McDonald's app, USA Today said.

Only registered loyalty program members are eligible to play digitally, which ties the promotion directly to the chain's push to grow its rewards program.

"Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a first-time player, we're giving fans even more ways to play in the McDonald's app... because two chances to win are always better than one," McDonald's said in a statement.

Prizes include 1 million American Airlines miles, a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, shopping sprees, vacation packages, and smaller rewards like free meals and bonus points.

The grand prize is a $1 million cash payout. According to McDonald's, more than 30 menu items will be part of the promotion, spanning breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites.

Monopoly Returns to McDonald's With Digital Twist

Players can win by collecting all the properties of a set, just like in the classic board game. Additional prizes are available through in-app bonus rounds that extend into November.

The revival comes as McDonald's works to maintain sales growth after a bumpy start to the year. According to CNN, for the quarter ending June 30, sales rose 2.5%, thanks in part to promotions tied to "The Minecraft Movie" and the return of crispy chicken strips.

The company also reintroduced its "Extra Value Meals" menu to attract more budget-conscious customers.

CEO Chris Kempczinski has emphasized the importance of loyalty sign-ups, noting that members tend to double their visits once enrolled. "Roughly a quarter of our business in the US is on our loyalty program," he said during a recent earnings call.

The Monopoly promotion first debuted in 1987 and quickly became one of McDonald's most successful marketing campaigns.

But it was also the subject of a massive fraud scandal in the 1990s and early 2000s, when insiders rigged the distribution of high-value game pieces.

The scheme, uncovered by the FBI in 2001, defrauded the company of more than $20 million.
