Loaves of bread sold at Walmart and Kroger in 12 states are being recalled because they may contain hazelnuts that were not listed clearly on the packaging, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.
The recalled product is the Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf, which is made by Hartford Bakery Inc.
Although the label includes the phrase "May Contain Tree Nuts," it does not say that it contains hazelnuts, which can be dangerous for people with nut allergies.
According to the FDA, 883 loaves from affected lot numbers were found to have visible hazelnuts.
The affected bread was sold in several states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, as well as Mississippi.
"People with a nut allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products," the FDA said in its notice.
A recent bread recall involves 12 oz. (340g) loaves with a July 13, 2025 expiration date, USA Today said.
Customers are being asked to check the front of the packaging for specific lot codes beginning with T10 174 or TH10 174, followed by numbers like 010206, 010306, and 020306.
If you spot one of these codes, it's best to avoid consuming the product and dispose of it or return it to the store.
The UPC on the bottom of the bag is 24126018152.

Hartford Bakery Recalls Loaves After Allergen Label Error
The issue came from a packaging mix-up during production. A bread recipe that includes hazelnuts was placed in bags intended for a nut-free version of the loaf.
According to FoxBusiness, though the bag states "May Contain Tree Nuts," it does not list hazelnuts specifically, which is required for consumer safety.
So far, no serious injuries or allergic reactions have been reported. Hartford Bakery reported that one person had mild digestive issues after eating the bread, while a few others spotted the nuts beforehand and reached out to the company with concerns.
If you purchased the recalled bread, do not eat it, especially if you or a family member has a nut allergy.
Customers can take the bread back to the store for a full refund. Anyone with questions can contact Hartford Bakery during business hours at 812-425-4642, Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 3 pm Central Time.
This recall is voluntary, and Hartford Bakery is working with the FDA to ensure all affected products are removed from store shelves promptly.
