Netflix was not just eyeing television shows in its drive for an original streaming content. In a world where Netflix needed to bid for proprietary content against Amazon.com and Hulu, the company was able to come up with a plan. The said plan was expected to be a magnet both for audiences and Emmy nominations.

"We will be expanding our Originals initiative to include broadly appealing feature documentaries and stand-up comedy specials," the video service said after its poorly received quarterly earnings report on Monday. "Netflix has become a big destination for fans of these much loved and often under-distributed genres."

Netflix was able to gain 29.8 million subscribers for domestic streaming. It also reported another 7.8 million accounts overseas.

Netflix planned to make documentaries and one-shot performances from comedians. However, analysts said that Time Warner's HBO and Amazon.com would not be threatened with these. HBO made its own program like 'Game of Thrones' and 'The Sopranos'. Amazon.com, on the other hand, started selling 'House of Cards' on DVDs.

Analysts further stated that Netflix must be able to own a lot of its content with its current hopes to move beyond serialized drama and television shows. It would be its advantage especially because Netflix is the only corporation with a huge number of subscribers.
