Delta airlines have obtained both European and US regulatory approvals in its bid to purchase 49% of Virgin Atlantic. This was confirmed by antitrust regulators located in both Brussels, Belgium and Washington DC, USA last Thursday.

The European Commission and the US Justice Department had cleared the proposed transaction. Also approving the venture was the US Department of Transportation.

The partnership would allow both airlines to expand their routes at Heathrow, since the limited landing slots have hindered growth of airline routes in the area. This also provides Delta the one up against competition from United Continental for the lucrative US-Europe travel route for business or tourism purposes.

In a statement, the US Justice Department said, "After a thorough investigation of the competitive effects of the proposed equity investment and joint venture, the Antitrust Division concluded that the facts and circumstances did not warrant further investigation or action,"

With the partnership in place, Delta and Virgin would be sharing travel lounge services as welll cooperate their respective frequent flier programs.
