Samsung filed a trademark for Turtle Glass, said to be Samsung's replacement for Corning Gorilla Glass. Rumors say that Samsung will use Turtle Glass instead of Gorilla Glass for the Galaxy S7 and future products like a foldable smartphone codenamed Project Valley.

GSMArena reported that Samsung has recently issued a trademark application for a new screen display called Turtle Glass. The application noted that Turtle Glass will be used as "protective tempered glass designed for phones, tablets, music players, cameras, and so on". Basically, it will be Samsung's very own scratch-proof glass display to replace Gorilla Glass.

According to SamMobile, Turtle Glass will sit on top of the upcoming Galaxy S7 and another newly-patented foldable smartphone. With the codename Project Valley, the smartphone with foldable display might have Turtle Glass adorning its screen and is expected to arrive next year. Turtle Glass could also be used for Samsung's watches, television sets, and tablets.

Corning's glass displays are known to be very tough and scratch-resistant, thus, a lot of OEM companies use the Gorilla Glass on their products. Samsung is one of Corning's biggest customers and the Turtle Glass might have a huge impact on Corning

However, there is a possibility that Samsung will not wholly turn its back on Corning, as Ubergizmo said in a report. Samsung is known for creating its own products, such as its in-house Exynos processors and the Tizen OS.

Previously, Samsung temporarily closed its doors to Qualcomm's processors in its recent flagships. Yet, the company is re-considering using both Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets on the Galaxy S7. It could be that Turtle Glass would only be used on select devices just like in the case of Exynos chipsets and Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Turtle Glass may mean what its name suggests: hard, scratch-resistant glass displays taking inspiration from turtle shells. Animals are common sources of inspiration for names of screen protectors just like the Gorilla Glass by Corning and the Dragontrail Glass by Asahi.
