"Once Upon A Time" season 5 will not see Regina as the new Savior as per co-creator Adam Horotwitz, shunning the previous speculations that Lana Parrilla's character will fill the shoes that Emma Swan left. But the new season will tackle the Dark One mythology, sparking reports of appearances from the former Dark Ones.

More and more official details about the ABC fantasy series are circulating online as it inches closer to its season 5 premiere. Recent reports include the possibility of Regina taking over as the new Savior as Jennifer Morrison's Emma will become the Dark Swan in the new episodes. However, co-showrunner Adam Horowitz clarified the speculations in his recent interview with TVLine.

"It's not necessarily that Regina is the Savior, but she has been put into a position now where she owes Emma [for saving her from the Darkness]," said Horowitz.

He added, "She's become a more heroic character over the years but now she has her biggest challenge yet, and it's an awkward fit for her because she's not used to having to lead or take charge."

Horowitz and co-creator Edward Kitsis also spoke to Yahoo about "Once Upon A Time"'s upcoming season and revealed some interesting plot regarding the Dark One arc.

Just recently, a season 5 photo made the rounds on the Internet, showing Rumplestiltskin and Emma together. This made fans wonder if the former Dark One will be helping Emma hone her newfound powers.

Horowitz teased that their partnership will be addressed early in season adding, "If we're going to have Emma be the Dark One, we're going to dive into Dark One mythology." Does this mean that the previous Dark Ones might appear in the new episodes? Will the mythology reveal its origin? That is surely one of the many interesting things to watch out for in season 5.

Regina may become even more heroic as she joins the quest to save Emma but she won't be the new Savior in "Once Upon A Time" season 5. The new season is also set to tackle the Dark One mythology, which might introduce us to the previous Dark Ones.

"Once Upon A Time" season 5 airs September 27 on ABC.
