Being the last mobile carriers withholding the latest Lollipop update, Sprint and AT&T are expected to roll out the 5.1.1 software version of Android Lollipop on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 units. The update is expected to hit Samsung's flagship smartphones before the Android 6.0 Marshmallow debuts later this month.
Reports are firm that mobile carriers are prompted by consumer pressure to update Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop before Marshmallow comes. In AT&T's Wireless Forums, some of device owners are eagerly asking the carrier to update their phones while some others are enraged by AT&T's nonchalance. T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular had already rolled out the said update to these phones since last month.
Sprint's latest update to Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 happened last August 24 bringing with it Samsung Pay, live broadcasting via Youtube, high quality audio (with Samsung headsets), user interface updates, and bug fixes. On August 5, the security patch for Stagefright vulnerability has been rolled out too.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will come via firmware over-the-air (FOTA) release and in stages, which means it may take to some devices on a later date than the others. If prompted that an update is available, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Here's a quick rundown to Lollipop features and improvements in Material Design, notification controls, device sharing, and device syncing.
