Pacific Rim 2 is on the works, as director Guillermo del Toro revealed that the Pacific Rim and its sequel will be two different movies. 'Sons of Anarchy' star Charlie Hunnam might not come back for the movie's sequel as his character has already solved his problem in the first film.

Pacific Rim 2 will be set a couple of years after the events in the first film. "It's a few years after the first one. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after -- what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump." Director Del Toro said. Aside from that, it will also reportedly feature more of the home world of the Kaiju.

According to Del Toro, they (along with Zak Penn) are brainstorming as to the possible ideas for the movie. "We are three years away, so to spoil anything would be fantastically silly of me," del Toro said.

"What I can tell you: [screenwriter Zak Penn] and I really went in, we started with [screenwriter Travis Beacham] about a year and a half ago, kicking ideas back and forth. And, admittedly, I said to Zak, let's keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak," he said.

Del Toro also revealed that they had a hard time crafting a world that had its own mythology and that didn't come from a comic book. Also, people will realize that the two movies (Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim 2) stand up on their own after Pacific Rim 2 is released into the big screen,

He also added saying, "I don't want to spoil it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own. They're very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different."

As for the film's characters, Dr. Newton Geiszler and Gottlieb will surely come back, as Charlie Day and Hermann Gottlieb who play the characters are also officially on board. Meanwhile, rumors have surfaced that Charlie Hunnam might not come back to reprise his role as Raleigh in the movie.

Del Toro later addressed the rumors saying, "We are taking the characters into a completely different journey this time because Raleigh for me solved his problem the minute he was able to go full circle and save Mako by sacrificing himself, which is what he couldn't do with his brother. He's not on that journey anymore; he's on a new journey."

The rumor might also reportedly be true, as Hunnam hasn't signed the contract for the sequel yet. More details about Pacific Rim 2 are expected to be revealed as it is still far from its release date on August 04, 2017.
