Josh Hartnett became famous for starring in several movies including "40 Days and 40 Nights." The 36-year-old actor has now moved on from the big screen to taking on a gothic series on TV for "Penny Dreadful."

Showtime's gothic thriller, "Penny Dreadful" has recently premiered its season two following the success of its first season. Josh Hartnett, who plays Ethan on the series, revealed some juicy details about his character and what the series holds for fans in season two.

The series recently brushed up on Ethan's secret and is slowly revealing his mysterious past. Hartnett revealed that he does not have any idea about Ethan's full backstory, as executive producer John Logan has not spilled details about his character's storyline.

"It's organic the way that you can kind of watch the process determine the actual character in the long run," Hartnett said, according to Comic Book Resources.

Hartnett, however, revealed that the most important thing for him is to create a character, which could hold different attributes and be many different things. The "Black Hawk Down" star also hinted that season two will see a blossoming relationship take place between Vanessa and Ethan. According to Hartnett, while Ethan is drawn to protecting and caring for others, he finds something "hotter" between him and Vanessa. Hartnett also revealed that his character would be sharing more scenes with Simon Russell Beale, as he tries to dig more into his mysterious past.

"Penny Dreadful" Season 2 premiered on April 19, 2015. While the show received a huge fan base following the success of season 1, the Showtime TV series fell on its latest episode, which aired on May 3, Deadline reported.

According to the outlet, the show only received 575,000 total viewers, which was 34% lower than its season 1 debut on May 11, 2014. The recent rating was also significantly lower than the show's lowest recorded audience of 680,000 in its history.
