Morpheus is about to take shape. Sony revealed in late September that the development of the new headset is nearly complete, reports the Tech Times and Venture Beat. Because of this, speculations about the product's release date have been made.
Project Morpheus Features
What's known of the Project Morpheus' features is what Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of Sony's development team handling the project, talked about when Sony first showed Project Morpheus at the Tokyo Game Show. According to The Wall Street Journal's report, which was picked up by the blogs mentioned earlier, Yoshida revealed that the project is 85% done.
Specific features are not yet available, but Yoshida did say that Project Morpheus' components can also be found in smartphones, which could place Project Morpheus within a relatively low price range. Franchise Herald reports on the other features that were revealed in the event:
"With the Morpheus and PlayStation 4, we can offer them a totall new virtual reality experience in a lighthearted and fun manner," Yoshida was quoted saying by The Wall Street Journal.
Speculated Release in 2015
However, even though Project Morpheus is approaching the final stages of its development, it is not expected to make its debut in the market this year. Franchise Herald reports that Yoshida confirmed in a GameSpot interview that it will not make its debut in 2014, and that in the interview, GameSpot surmised consumers will see a 2015 release instead.
Yoshida also dispelled rumors that Project Morpheus will cost $1000 when it does come out. His announcement of the use of smartphone components corroborates with his statement that Project Morpheus will be much cheaper than this speculated amount.
