Yahoo has acquired California-based virtual gaming service Cloud Party, which will shut down on February 21, 2014. Cloud Party's team will be joining Yahoo after it closes down, according to TechCrunch.

Founded by a team of console game industry veterans, Cloud Party was built as a free-form virtual world with 3D content generated by users, the report detailed.

The team's next project at Yahoo is not yet confirmed, but co-founder Sam Thompson hinted in his farewell blog post that it will still be related to the gaming sector. Although Yahoo has its own games portal, it does not yet have an in-browser virtual world like that of Cloud Party, the report noted.

A Yahoo spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch: "Yahoo has acquired Cloud Party, a company that has created a virtual 3D experience, directly in users' browser... We're excited to merge their unique perspective and experience with a team that is just as passionate about gaming."
