Home automation startup August raised USD8 million in a Series A funding round led by Maveron. Cowboy Ventures, Rho Ventures, SoftTech VC, and Industry Ventures also participated in the round, according to a report published by VentureBeat.

August launched its smart lock device last May. This device was partly developed by Jawbone's Yves Behar. The August smart lock is a bluetooth enabled device that lets owners send virtual keys to anyone via smartphone. According to August, this feature makes the product more secure compared to traditional locks, the report said.

Jason Johnson, August Chief Executive Officer, told VentureBeat of the smart lock device: "What we wanted to do was create something that matches your existing door hardware and then blends in and disappears."

Johnson said the company plans to use the new funding for the marketing of smart lock. August will also expand its workforce and move in to a new headquarters, VentureBeat reported.
