Apple's newest iPhones set a new record for opening weekend sales. Apple announced that the combined sales for its iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C topped 9 million when they were launched over the weekend. Although the company did not break down the specific sales of each of the two phones, it did confirm that the sales represented a new record. It can be recalled that the iPhone 5 only sold 5 million units for its opening weekend.

In a statement, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the demand for their latest iPhones was incredible. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

The sales record beat analysts earlier estimates of opening weekend sales. Based on an AllThingsD report, sales predictions ranged from 5 million to a little over 7 million units.
