Tata Sky, the direct-to-home television operator, had drawn plans to invest its INR900 crore this fiscal year on technology upgrades in order to reach out and achieve a 30% growth in subscribers.

According to Tata Sky CEO Harit Nagpal, in an interview with PTI, "We will invest around INR 900 crore to shift to new technology that will help us expand our channel offerings."

In this program, the television operator would be switching to the MPEG-4 format from its current MPEG-2 standard. This format would allow more than 300 channels from the current 230 channels. The technology upgrade would be part of an overall strategy to expand its subscriber base, which currently numbers 10 million.

Nagpal added, "We have already started the process of moving over to the new technology. This is likely to be completed by July 2014. We have to change set-top boxes of each of our customers, hence it will take so long."
