An aide of Angela Merkel said the German Chancellor would be willing to debate about the crisis affecting the Euro zone. Hermann Groehe said Merkel would answer the European argument posed by Peer Steinbrueck, her challenger. Groehe is the Secretary General of the Christian Democrats and in charge of Merkel's campaign for reelection.

He told Reuters, "We are glad to debate European politics because the high approval ratings that Angela Merkel enjoys among the German population arise not least from the confidence she has gained among the people through her successful work on the European debt crisis."

Groehe also added that they want to defend the euro against those who proposed that the Euro zone share debt liability. He also said that they would guard it against those who wanted a return to national currencies.

Germany's election is set to happen in more than three weeks. Steibrueck said that Merkel hid the real cost of the crisis in the Euro zone from voters in Germany. The television debate between Merkel and Steinbrueck is scheduled on Sunday.
