In an online statement to viewers and subscribers, the New York Times (NYT) apologized for the crash of its website. "The outage occurred within seconds of a scheduled maintenance update, which we believe was the cause." Internet reports said that the outage last longer in some areas in the US.

IT experts are split on the paper's statement. On puck.nether.net, a post suggested that the team in charge of the paper's site maintenance might have made a mistake in rolling out software updates in both production and backup servers. Former National Security Agency official Cedric Leighton said "My suspicion leads me to believe that this is not really an internal issue. This is something that goes way beyond that."

This was not the first time NYT had its website hacked. The paper released a statement that Chinese hackers have been stealing access codes and relevant information for four months. The reason was said to gather intelligent leads of the family of China's prime minister.

The paper's shares fell down 1.67%, closing at a share price of USD12.05 Wednesday.
