EA Partners with Stable Diffusion to Develop Games Using AI—Will the AI Write Codes?

Will generative AI take over EA's code development for games?

Electronic Arts is stepping into a new world of game development as it unveiled its latest partnership with Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion.

The company revealed that this new partnership would help in the development of its future games, and it will center on creating new "transformative AI models" that will also include various tools and workflows for the company.

EA Partners with Stable Diffusion's Parent Company

According to a new press release shared by Electronic Arts, the company revealed that for the past years, they have integrated machine learning and artificial intelligence into their work, and it is now taking the "next step" in this journey.

EA claimed that the focus would be to create new models, tools, and more that will help their artists, designers, and developers to create content and build games with AI at the forefront. According to EA, humans are still at the center of storytelling, but they are now working towards tasking AI as a "trusted ally" in this development towards improvements in their work.

"Together with Stability AI, we're amplifying that creativity. Giving artists, designers, and developers the power to dream bigger and build more," said EA's VP of Creative Innovation, Kallol Mitra.

The main goal of this strategic partnership with Stability AI would be to empower the teams over at EA, and according to the Head of Technical Art of EA Sports, Steve Kestell, "I use the term smarter paintbrushes."

"We are giving our creatives the tools to express what they want. Tools that will allow creativity to get directly from people's minds, and into our experiences," he added.

Will EA Let AI Write Game Codes?

According to Engadget's report, the main focus of EA's collaboration with Stability AI focuses on creating "Physically Based Rendering materials" with new tools that would help generate 2D textures. The team would look towards using their created models or tools with Stability AI to help create art, designs, environments, and more for future games using Stable Diffusion's image generation capabilities.

Last year, Electronic Arts had made a massive investment in generative AI as part of its investor presentation, claiming that the latest technology will be the "very core" of its business. The goal for the company is to create new games faster, cheaper, and with high quality with as many as 100 AI projects lined up, according to EA CEO Andrew Wilson.

Based on EA's announcement, the company's partnership with Stability AI will focus mostly on the art and creatives of the game, and not on letting generative AI write code for its future games.
