Elon Musk has officially launched a new political group called the America Party, following a heated split with President Donald Trump over his recent tax and spending law.

Musk made the announcement Saturday on his platform X, saying, "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

According to AP News, the move came just one day after Trump signed a bill that Musk strongly opposed, calling it a "disgusting abomination" that would add trillions to the national debt.

The tech billionaire, who once worked closely with Trump and donated heavily to his 2024 campaign, had warned that he would form a new party if the bill became law.

Now, with that bill passed, Musk is going forward with his threat.

Trump fired back at Musk's announcement on Sunday, saying, "I think it's ridiculous to start a third party. It only adds confusion. We have a two-party system, and it works." He also took to Truth Social later in the day to call Musk "off the rails."

Elon Musk's America Party Targets 2026 Elections

Musk's new party aims to offer an alternative to what he called a "one-party system" in Washington, CNN said.

While many Americans say they want more political choices, third parties in the US have rarely gained lasting traction.

Still, experts say Musk's money and influence could make an impact, especially in the 2026 midterm elections.

Musk said the party will start small, backing a few candidates for House and Senate next year. It's not clear yet if he has formally registered the America Party with the Federal Election Commission.

Multiple filings with similar names were submitted over the weekend, but none appeared to be official.

The fallout between Musk and Trump has put Musk's businesses in a tight spot. The government has many contracts with SpaceX and Tesla, and Trump has hinted these deals may be at risk if Musk continues to push his new political path.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a frequent critic of Musk, said Sunday that while Musk's ideas are popular, "Elon himself is not polling well." He also warned that Musk should focus on business, not politics.
