Honda is recalling nearly 259,000 vehicles, including popular Honda and Acura models, due to a defect in the brake pedal that may lead to accidents, the company confirmed this week.

The affected vehicles include 2023–2025 Honda Pilot SUVs, 2023–2025 Acura MDX SUVs, and 2021–2025 Acura TLX sedans, FoxBusiness said.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the brake pedal may shift out of position during use.

This can cause the vehicle to brake unexpectedly or prevent the driver from braking properly.

Honda says the issue comes from a small but important part called a pivot pin, which wasn't installed correctly during manufacturing.

If it's loose or missing, drivers may feel abnormal movement in the brake pedal.

Warning signs include a brake malfunction light turning on or brake lights staying lit even when the pedal isn't being pressed.

Honda Urges Owners to Check Cars After Brake Safety Issue

While the problem has not caused any injuries or crashes so far, Honda is urging all affected owners to bring their vehicles in for inspection. If needed, the entire brake pedal assembly will be replaced at no cost.

The problem was first reported to Honda in April 2024. After more cases were found, the company began looking into the issue and traced it back to its parts supplier.

By June 2025, Honda determined the issue did not meet federal safety standards and issued the recall.

Letters notifying owners will begin going out in late July. Drivers who receive a notice should contact their local dealership to schedule a repair appointment.

According to RoadAndTrack, only about 1% of the recalled vehicles are expected to actually have the problem, but Honda says it is recalling all affected models out of caution.

Honda and its luxury brand Acura have a long-standing reputation for building reliable vehicles. In 2024 alone, more than 1.29 million Honda cars and 132,300 Acura models were sold in the US.

"This is about safety," a company spokesperson said. "We want customers to have full confidence in their vehicles."
