Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26, 2025, and many Americans are planning their day around sales, errands, and honoring fallen heroes.

But before you head out, it's important to know which places will be open — and which ones won't.

Banks across the US will be closed on Memorial Day. If you need to do banking, plan ahead or use online options.

According to NBC Chicago, the US Postal Service will also pause deliveries. Post offices will remain closed, as Memorial Day is one of 11 federal holidays recognized by the USPS.

State offices like courthouses and the Secretary of State's locations will be closed in places like Illinois and Indiana. This includes other non-emergency government services.

Major Retailers: Open or Closed on Memorial Day?

Most big retail stores will stay open, but hours may vary:

Walmart: Open regular hours (typically 6 am – 11 pm)

Target: Open standard hours. Check your local store.

Costco: Closed for the holiday.

Sam's Club: Open 8 am – 6 pm for Plus members, 10 am – 6 pm for Club members.

Aldi: Open limited hours. Call your local store to confirm.

Kroger and Jewel-Osco: Open, but some pharmacy hours may be reduced or closed.

Home Depot and Lowe's: Open regular hours, but it's smart to double-check with local locations.

Menard's: Open regular hours.

Best Buy: Open from 10 am to 9 pm

IKEA: Open regular hours.

Coffee Shops and Restaurants

Starbucks: Open.

Chipotle: Open with regular hours.

Clothing and Department Stores

Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta: Open, but store hours vary, USA Today said.

Macy's, Kohl's, JCPenney, and Belk: All open. Belk will operate 10 am to 8 pm
