Volvo is recalling more than 400,000 vehicles in the US due to a rearview camera issue that could block drivers from seeing behind their cars when backing up.
The company reported the defect to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on May 1, 2025.
A total of 413,151 cars from model years 2021 through 2025 are affected. The issue stems from a software problem in the vehicles' central electronic module (CEM), which can cause the rearview camera screen to go black when the car is put in reverse.
Though no crashes or injuries have been reported so far, Volvo acknowledges that this issue violates federal safety rules.
Since 2018, all new cars sold in the US must have working rearview cameras. These cameras help prevent accidents when drivers are reversing, especially in crowded or residential areas.
To fix the problem, Volvo is offering a free software update. Owners can visit a dealership or receive the update remotely through an over-the-air (OTA) system if their car supports it. This allows many customers to get the fix without leaving home, TNJ said.
