This September 2, Monday, Labor Day 2024 celebrates the contribution of American workers and the unofficial end of summer. While it's a day for relaxation and family gatherings, not all businesses and services will be open or closed.

Here's a breakdown of what's open and closed this Labor Day 2024.

Banks, Government Offices, and Postal Office

As a federal holiday, Labor Day means government offices are closed. Fortune reported that this includes city, county, and federal buildings. At the same time, the US Postal Service will not deliver regular mail or packages, although Priority Mail Express services will continue.

Banks will also be closed, but according to CBS News, ATMs and online banking services will remain available. 

Retail and Grocery Stores

Fortunately, most major retailers will be open on Labor Day 2024, so people can grab last-minute supplies. 

CBS News shared that Walmart, Target, and many department stores such as Macy's and Kohl's will operate during their regular hours, typically from 6 AM to 11 PM or 7 AM to 10 PM, depending on the location.

Meanwhile, grocery stores like Albertsons, Food Lion, Publix, and Trader Joe's will be open as well, though hours may vary, per Fortune. For instance, Publix will maintain regular store hours but close its pharmacies, while Food Lion will operate from 6 AM to 11 PM.

Costco, however, will be closed on Labor Day, a policy consistent with its observance of several US holidays throughout the year, according to USA Today.

Pharmacies

Pharmacy operations on Labor Day are mixed. 

CVS and Walgreens will have open locations, though Walgreens' pharmacies may have limited hours or be closed except for 24-hour locations, as reported by CBS News. Publix pharmacies will be closed for the day.

Rite Aid will be open in many areas, but it's advisable to check local hours.

Restaurants

CBS News shared that most popular fast-food and casual dining restaurants will be open on Labor Day. Chains like McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin', and Starbucks will serve customers, although hours can vary by location. 

However, if you're looking for a sit-down meal, USA Today suggests Olive Garden and Cracker Barrel, with some like Waffle House and IHOP operating during regular hours.

Delivery Services

Much like government services, delivery services will be impacted as well. 

USA Today stated that UPS and FedEx will not offer regular pickup or delivery services on Labor Day, and FedEx Office stores will have modified hours. But it's best to check with your local stores for any specific adjustments in hours.
