80-year-old Eileen Brennan of ‘Private Benjamin’ dies

Eighty-year-old Eileen Brennan, an American actress, died Sunday. The cause of death was bladder cancer. She died at her home in Burbank, Los Angeles.

"Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Eileen. She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten. She will be greatly missed by all of us," said Brennan's family in a statement.

"No one ever made me laugh more! Now I cry. Please keep singing, darling, from on high," Goldie Hawn, who starred the 1980 film "Private Benjamin", wrote on Twitter about the late actress.

Brennan worked with Hawn and became famous in "Private Benjamin". She was nominated for Oscar best supporting actress in 1981 because of her role as US Army Captain Doreen Lewis in the movie.

"Private Benjamin" was one of the biggest box office hits during that year. It was included in the top 10 highest grossing domestic film for 1980, according to Box Office Mojo. The film earned US$4,739,769 during its opening and had total gross earnings of US$69,847,348.
