Amazon conducts massive recruitment before Obama comes to visit

Amazon.com Inc. revealed that it will have a hiring spree Monday. The massive recruitment will happen before President Barack Obama comes to visit the online retailer's warehouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Tuesday.

The hiring spree aimed to fill up more than 5,000 full-time jobs. The new hires will be spread across 17 of Amazon's fulfillment centers in the United States. If completely filled up, this would roughly be a 25% increase in its full-time staff in its fulfillment centers. Currently, fulfillment center staff number at more than 20,000 nationwide.

As of May this year, there were approximately 46 fulfillment centers in North America. Amazon has a fulfillment center near San Antonio, Texas, which cost US$166 million, according to published reports. It also has one in Robbinsonville, New Jersey, which cost US$200 million. DallasNews also reported that Amazon was constructing a fulfillment center in DuPont, Washington, which cost US$100 million. Meanwhile, one distribution warehouse located in Guadalupe County was worth US$166 million.
