"Wayward Pines" Season 2 has been renewed by Fox and ordered 10 episodes of the thriller that is expected to premiere in the summer of 2016. The renewal announcement came after five months since the first season ended.

Fox Broadcasting Network president David Madden acknowledged the show's success for the network last summer in his announcement. He further said, "We were absolutely blown away by the mysterious and surprising world that M. Night Shyamalan and his team created, and the twisting-and-turning storytelling that drew viewers in from day one."

The series was first introduced as an events series, which actually means that it was a one-time project only. This makes the renewal somewhat of a surprise. Deadline reports that its consistent ratings performance did not go unnoticed by the network and discussions for a "Wayward Pines" Season 2 began back in June.

Another reason why the "Wayward Pines" Season 2 pickup surprised many is that the main character Ethan (Matt Dillon) died in the season finale along with a number of other key characters says Variety. Because of the long time frame between the project's production and its airdate, the options on all actors had also lapsed long ago. The plan to have a second season with different characters but in the same world would not make the show follow a straight anthology format.

According to Coming Soon, the new season will pick up where the first left off when a new arrival in Wayward Pines finds himself in the middle of a serious rebellion, as the residents battle over how to preserve the endangered human race. No new casting for Season 2 has been announced.

Series creator Chad Hodge, who wrote the adaptation of Blake Crouch's best selling books, will not be returning as showrunner. He has a new project that is based on another Crouch book series, Good Behavior, which just wrapped up production at TNT. Believe creator Mark Friedman is set to replace him.

Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan is still on board as the executive producer along with Blake Crouch himself, Donald De Line, Ashwin Rajan and Mark Friedman.

"Wayward Pines" Season 2 being picked up by Fox both surprised and got its fans excited but whether it will enjoy the same success as the first season with a new cast remains to be seen. Tell us what you think about this in the section below.
