'The Mummy' is an upcoming reboot directed by Alex Kurtzman. It may feature Tom Cruise in the leading role. Kurtzman denied any reports that his new film will be connected with 'Dracula' even though it is only one of a series of monster films planned under Universal Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise has been offered to join the reboot of 'The Mummy' franchise that originally starred Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz. It seemed that Universal Pictures needed a bankable Hollywood action star to bring in new and old fans alike. The studio remained mum on the matter.

Another article from the Independent stated that no deal between Cruise and Universal are currently in the works. Cruise is currently filming 'Mena' and 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back'. He also worked as producer in director Christopher McQuarrie's 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' in 2015.

It remains unknown whether the film will follow the 1999 release or the even earlier 1932 film of the same name starring Boris Karloff in the title role. The reboot is said to be part of a planned monster franchise under Universal - the "Monsterverse" - which includes 'Dracula', 'The Wolfman', 'The Invisible Man' and 'The Bride of Frankenstein'.

According to Comic Book, Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the upcoming film. He is best known for his work as either director, producer or writer on previous blockbuster films including 'Now You See Me', 'Star Trek Into Darkness', 'People Like Us', 'Transformers', 'Mission Impossible III' and 'The Island'.

Kurtzman expressed his enthusiasm over the new project especially since he only got to direct one feature film throughout his career. He said, "I feel really ready to go and Universal's been incredible about supporting our whole monster endeavor, so I feel like I'm going to have amazing people around me in order to help us launch it."

He previously revealed that audiences may see another creature in his film besides the titular mummy. When asked if his 2017 reboot would somehow connect to 'Dracula', he replied, "The Mummy isn't connected to Dracula [Untold] but I think that is an ongoing conversation."

'The Mummy' is an upcoming reboot of the popular franchise of the same name started in the 1930's and revitalized in 1999. The franchise is a series of horror-adventure films centered on an ancient Egyptian priest resurrected into the modern times bringing with him a curse that could bring about the end of humanity.
