The massive protests in Brazil, Egypt and Turkey should jolt governments around the world to ensure they are providing crucial public services and opportunities to their citizens. This was stated in an interview last Friday, World Bank President Jin Yong Kim.

Frustration with the political establishment and the lack of opportunity and unmet expectations for better standards of living have urged people in those countries to march in the streets and demand change.

In recent weeks, protests have swept Brazil that has sent shockwaves through the country's political establishment. This prompted a flurry of promises to improve public services as well as measures aimed at quelling the disorder.

In Turkey, the protests began at the end of May when police used force against campaigners. These campaigners opposed the planned development of a central Istanbul park. The protests spiraled into broader protests against the country's Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan and his government.
