Although the film's release date has been moved, Guillermo del Toro clarified that "Pacific Rim 2" is still happening. He also further revealed new details on the script, and addressed the topic on the film's budget..

In his interview with Blastr, the "Crimson Peak" director revealed why the film had to be moved. According to Del Toro, the film was moved because they wanted the final draft of the film to be turned in, along with the final budget. "I needed to find a way to make the movie bigger than the first one for less money than the first one. So we did a lot of R&D and learned a lot of tricks and what works and what doesn't on the first one. We are applying all that.", Del Toro added.

Furthermore, as reported by Tech Times, Del Toro also addressed the issue through his Twitter account saying that the budget for the film is now ready, and they are now waiting for the script from John Spaihts. He also added that the film's fate will eventually depend on whether the studio will give them the go signal to actualize it.

Moreover, without giving away details about the plot, Den of Geek reports that Del Toro said the screenplay for the sequel is currently shaping up to be more interesting. "I think the screenplay is more interesting for me than even the first. It has a lot of strange complexities and now that we know the characters I can enjoy myself with Newt and Gottlieb and Herc and Raleigh", Del Toro revealed.

Del Toro is set to return in the director's chair for "Pacific Rim 2". Although no actors have officially signed on for the film as of yet, Del Toro previously revealed that most of the characters who survived in the previous film are likely to return thus it is heavily speculated that it will see the return of Mako, Gottlieb, Newt, Raleigh and many others. More details are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
