Shuanghui-Smithfield Deal Concerns More US Senators

On Friday, numerous US senators raised their concerns regarding a Chinese company's planned acquisition of US pork company, Smithfield Foods Inc. The particular concern was in light of restrictions to place on imports of US meat.

National interests should be protected thus thorough review must be taken, according to Senate Finance Committee Senator Michael Froman. He wrote a letter to US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew stating concernes about said deal.

Senators Max Bausus and Orrin Hatch added urging consideration given to the impact of the transaction on food safety in the US.

A demand was echoed made on Thursday by fifteen of the twenty members of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Shuanghui International, a Chinese meat company hopes to acquire Smithfield Foods Inc. The company is the world's biggest pork producer and processor. The deal was priced at US$4.7 billion and would be the biggest takeover of a US firm by a Chinese company.
