Oil sales in Nigeria are currently decreasing, but Nigerian Vice President Namadi Sambo sees this as an opportunity to bring more jobs closer to the country's citizens. This can be done by building oil refineries and further developing the same market.

Being an OPEC member, Nigeria does not have enough refining capacity. The country even depends on imported fuel to meet its local demands. According to the US Energy Information Administration, in February the shipments from Nigeria have decreased to 194,000 barrels daily. This is also the lowest shipment the country has received in over 18 years. This would also mean that Nigeria will lose its position to be Africa's largest producer of crude oil since year 2009.

Nigeria imported a total of US$4.6 billion to the US during the fourth quarter of last year, as stated in the country's National Bureau of Statistics. With the decrease in crude imports to US, Angola is positioned to overtake the country as Africa's largest crude producer.
