Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update Guide: Custom Release for Google's 2012 Nexus 7

Google's 2012 Nexus 7 users have been clamoring for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for their device and a lot of custom ROM developers provided updates for the device.

OrionLP, Chroma, XenonHD and Dirty Unicorns are the newest custom ROMs based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop ready to be installed to Google's 2012 version of Nexus 7. Among the custom releases, OrionLP provides the most useful features and notable changes.

Some of the improvements brought in the release include a master heads up display and an expanded desktop for more work productivity on Android device. As expected, increase in performance stability also is at work.

2012 Nexus 7 manufacturer Asus has not officially released an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update yet but through OrionLP custom ROM can provide better performance. The firmware installation only needs a custom recovery like ClockworldMod for ROM zip flashing and Google Apps zip files.

OrionLP's developer warns interested Nexus 7 owners that the installation of the firmware stock will be void the device's warranty. Before proceeding to the installation, make sure to back up data through an external storage device or PC since it will wipe out all stored files and information including pictures, music, messages, downloaded apps, call history and APN settings, among others.

Before proceeding to the installation process, make sure the USB debugging has been enabled while the battery must be charged at least 80 percent. Remember also that it is recommended to pursue the installation if your device is locked to a carrier unless it is specified.

To install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update via OrionLP custom ROM, here's a step by step process to follow.

1.     Download OrionLP custom ROM here.

2.     Download Google Apps here.

3.     Plug in the device's USB cord to PC.

4.     Place the custom ROM zip file to device's external storage card.

5.     Shut down the device and plug from PC.

6.     Turn on Bootloader mode.

7.     Head over to ClockworldMod recovery mode.

8.     Clear the device.

9.     Clear cache partition.

10.   Head over back to ClockworldMod recovery.

11.   Tap Advanced.

12.   Tap 'Wipe Dalvik Cache.'

13.   Go to home recovery screen.

14.   Select Install zip from SD card.

15.   Tap Choose zip from SD card.

16.   Go to Android 4.4.4 ROM zip file.

17.   Begin the installation.

18.   Repeat the installation.

19.   Go to +++++Go Back+++++.

20.   Reboot device.

In a matter of minutes, the booting process shall be completed. To check the success of the installation, head over to Settings > About device.
