Fans of the fictional superhero "Spiderman" will be rejoicing as Sony announced on Thursday that an animated feature of the popular Marvel Comics superhero will be released in 2018. The said animated movie will be spearheaded by "The Lego Movie" directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

The announcement was made by the new Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. He disclosed on stage that the film will "co-exist" with the live-action Spider-Man universe. However, the press release clarifies that it will exist separately: "The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing."

The picture will be produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and along with former Sony Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal. With fans clamouring for a new "Spiderman" instalment, Rothman, on the other hand, did not divulge any news on the live-action "Spider-Man" from Marvel's Cinematic Universe that will hit the big screen on July 28, 2017. The live action film will also be produced by Pascal and Marvel's Kevin Feige. Similarly, a Spider-Man appearance will be shown in "Captain America: Civil War" that is slated for a May 6, 2016 release.

Meanwhile, Miller and Lord are also the duo behind "21 Jump Street" and its sequel "22 Jump Street" plus "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." Aside from masterminding the animated project, the duo will also write the treatment and will be producing the film.

Marvel's Spider-Man is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films grossing more than $4 billion worldwide. "Spiderman" the animated film is set to release on July 20, 2018.

What are your prospects for the new Spiderman live action as well as the animated version? Are you excited for Spidey's three appearances in 2016, 2017, and 2018? Your thoughts are welcome on the comments section!
