As the Pirate Bay still struggles to get back on its feet, Kickass Torrents is currently the one drawing the attention of copyright authorities. Recently, the torrent-hosting website kickass.so got booted out from its domain server in Somalia. Nonetheless the site found its way again as KAT returns to its old kickass.to domain.

KickassTorrents is known to host an innumerable collection of downloadable contents, making it the most selected site next to the Pirate Bay. The torrent site has become the central hub of a variety of downloads on the Internet. KickAss Torrents has gained popularity over the years, with millions of users and "pirates" visiting every day.

While plenty of other torrent sites have the same selection, they’re all based on users who would publish torrent extensions of huge files. Following the extension leads another user to the movie or music file, where they would connect with all other users hosting the file (“seeds”) or downloading it simultaneously with them(“peers’). What makes KAT different from the others include its sheer size as well as its capability to avoid the authorities.

The site was first launched as Kat.ph, and then later became KickAss.to when police pressure was already building up. Just last year, KickAss Torrent registered under a Somalian server and remained active until it was taken down last week by the authorities. Apparently, the administrators thought that the having a Somalian-based domain is already safe for their operations. Unfortunately, the Somalian authorities would have to adhere with the anti-piracy law and would have to remove KAT from their domain servers. They returned to their Tongan server shortly after being taken down.

The Pirate Bay resumed full-time operations two months after its server room was raided by Swedish police force, which may not be possible if Isohunt wasn’t able to preserve its rich database. KickAss Torrents, on the other hand, was able to act sooner, making their down time almost unnoticed.
